Bear Trail by bike with your dog: trailers, baskets and tips

The Bear Trail is one of the few greenways in Spain where cycling with your dog is comfortable and safe. But if your pet cannot trot the entire route (due to size, age or heat), you will need a trailer or a basket. This guide covers the options available, reference prices and which section to choose for your situation.

Options based on your dog's weight

Local operators offer three types of pet equipment. They are rented together with the bicycle at the same pick-up point.

Front or rear basket

Up to 5 kg ~8 EUR

Mounts directly onto the bike. Your dog sits inside and can peek out. Minimal added weight, no impact on pedalling.

Small breeds such as chihuahua, yorkshire terrier or similar

Small trailer

Up to 25 kg ~22 EUR

Attaches to the rear axle of the bicycle. Includes side protection and ventilation. This is the most popular option.

Medium breeds: beagle, cocker spaniel, French bulldog

Large trailer

25-40 kg ~30 EUR

Reinforced frame with extra interior space. Adds considerable weight: an e-bike is recommended for longer sections or uphill stretches.

Large breeds: labrador, golden retriever, German shepherd

Reference prices. Check the current rates on our pricing table.

Which section to choose with a trailer

Not all sections are equal when you are towing extra weight. Check the interactive map to locate each starting point.

Tuñón - Proaza

~7 km (one way)

Best choice

Flat profile, short distance and plenty of stopping points along the river. Ideal for your first outing with a trailer.

Entrago - Buyera (descent)

~12 km (one way)

Recommended with an e-bike

Longer but mostly downhill. If you are towing a large trailer, the e-bike makes up for the extra weight on the way back.

Proaza - Valdemurio

~6 km (one way)

Conditional

Less foot traffic and beautiful natural surroundings, but some stretches have a bit more elevation gain. Better if you already have experience with the trailer.

Practical tips

Get your dog used to it beforehand

If your dog has never ridden in a trailer, try a short test at home or in a park first. Letting them associate the space with positive things (treats, walkies) prevents stress on the day of the ride.

Water and stops every 30 minutes

Ventilation inside the trailer is decent, but temperatures rise in summer. Stop regularly so your dog can hop out, drink and stretch their legs.

Watch out in tunnels

The Bear Trail has several tunnels. The sudden change in light and temperature can startle your dog. Slow down and talk to them calmly.

Trailer deposit

Most operators ask for a 40 EUR deposit that is refunded when you return the trailer in good condition. Bring cash just in case.

Frequently asked questions

Can I rent a dog trailer on the Bear Trail?

Yes. Bike rental operators offer baskets (for small dogs) and trailers (for medium and large dogs). They are booked together with the bicycle.

What is the maximum weight the trailer can carry?

It depends on the model: baskets hold up to 5 kg, small trailers up to 25 kg and large trailers up to 40 kg. If your dog weighs over 40 kg, ask about special options.

Can my dog run alongside the bike instead of riding in a trailer?

It depends on the section and the temperature. On hot days or longer stretches, a trailer is the better choice. If your dog is athletic and used to running, they can trot alongside you on short sections with frequent stops.

Do I need to book the trailer in advance?

Highly recommended on weekends, bank holidays and during peak season. Each operator only has a limited number of units and they sell out quickly.

Does the trailer fit any bicycle?

Yes. Rental trailers come with a universal hitch that works with every bike the operator provides (MTB, city bike and e-bike).

Is there a deposit for the trailer?

Most operators charge a 40 EUR deposit that is refunded when you return the trailer. It is paid in cash when you pick up the equipment.
