Your questions answered

Frequently asked questions

Can you do the Bear Trail with young children?

Yes, the Bear Trail is one of the most family-friendly cycling routes in all of Spain. The surface is flat and paved, with no significant hills. The most popular sections for families are Tuñón–Proaza (11 km) and Entrago–Buyera (18 km). Rental companies offer child trailers, baby seats and bikes adapted for children.

How much does bike rental cost?

We work with updated reference rates (checked 25 February 2026). Current reference: adult 25 EUR, child under 8 years 22 EUR, semi-tandem 22 EUR, child trailer 22 EUR, baby seat 14 EUR, dog cart up to 25 kg 22 EUR and dog cart 25–40 kg 30 EUR.

When is the best time to visit?

The Bear Trail can be ridden all year round, but the best time is from April to October. Spring (May–June) brings lush green scenery and pleasant temperatures. Autumn (September–October) rewards you with spectacular colours in the beech and chestnut forests. Summer is busier, but the weather is ideal.

Can you see real bears?

At the Proaza Bear Enclosure (beside the trail, between Proaza and Tuñón) live the bears Paca and Molina, rescued as cubs. You can watch them from a raised viewing platform. Spotting bears in the wild is possible but very rare — the Cantabrian brown bear is a shy animal that inhabits the most remote mountain areas.

How do I get to the Bear Trail?

From Oviedo it takes about 30 minutes via the AS-228. The main access points are Tuñón, Proaza, Caranga de Abajo and Entrago. There is free parking at the main trailheads. There is also an ALSA bus service from Oviedo to several villages along the route.

Do I need to book bikes in advance?

During peak season (July, August, bank holidays and Easter) advance booking is highly recommended, especially if you need e-bikes, tandems or child trailers, as availability is limited. In low season there is generally availability without prior booking.
